ABOUT

"My work and the process of making it is dependent on freeing myself of my conscious thought and working with the material spontaneously and expressively which has resulted in the birth of 'Blobbism'."

Blobbism is expression through blob; as in, amorphous, irregular form, expressed spontaneously and freely.

Austin has been exploring art, form, movement, colour and detail for as long as he can remember.  He indulges his senses by playing with various mediums and allowing his internal creator to create.

Until recently, Austin was best known for his work carving stone, as an architectural stone carver working on some of London's most prestigious historic buildings.
Until recently, Austin was best known for his work carving stone, as an architectural stone carver working on some of London's most prestigious historic buildings.

However, in 2005, Austin was awarded a Fellowship from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust which enabled him to travel to Pietrasanta, Italy where he worked at the world renowned contemporary sculpture studio, Studio Sem. There, working along side the studio's highly skilled Artisans as well as Internationally known artist sculptors who make their own work at Studio Sem, Austin had a life-changing experience as he was  inspired to create work of his own. He could not resist the temptation of his new found freedom to 'play' with the abundantly accessible marble available at the studio and create work which reflected his own feelings, passions, and emotions.

In the early days of October 2005 during his Winston Churchill Fellowship, Austin selected a beautiful piece of Carrara marble from the studio's supply and began to work it freely and directly with his hand tools. Austin's journey in, out, over and around this  chunk of marble now represents his personal transformation from 'Stone Carver' to Sculptor. The finished  sculpture is titled 'Dipsy Doodle' which can be seen on the gallery page.
