CORNERSTONE - A Community Landmark

‘Working with the people of Bermondsey and the wider community, the true expression of the people, set in stone’.

CORNERSTONE

Cornerstone is a public engagement art piece by artist Austin Emery who worked with the people of Bermondsey and the wider community to solidify connections across the local area, London and beyond. Through this challenging time in history marked by divisive political and cultural happenings as well as the global pandemic, Cornerstone has brought people together through the creation of a public art piece which enhances social cohesion and empowers the community.

Pieces of stone, hand-carved by children and adult participants from Whites Grounds Estate, Bermondsey Street and the wider community during open public workshops (held before the COVID-19 global pandemic, back in October 2013), have been permanently assembled into this totemic monument along side historic stone fragments from Southwark Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament and bones from the River Thames. Together this forms a living art heritage, connecting people across time, social and geographical boundaries. The work of yesterday’s stone masons exist along side the contemporary work of today’s community.

The project was completed through a combination of practical voluntary and financial contributions secured largely during a #CrowdfundLDN campaign which saw 205 individuals and organizations contribute which included the support of the Mayor of London. Many thanks also to different departments at Southwark Council, including Parks, Regeneration, Highways, Culture and Planning for their support.
